Finding a brilliant diamond engagement ring

by Whitney Fairfield-Johnson

Buying engagement rings is one of the hardest decisions when you have decided to propose to your loved one. It is after all jewellery which she will wear for the rest of her life. Whether you plan to surprise your future fiancé on bended knee with a ring or would prefer to shop together there are many things to consider.

Personal taste is important here, give some thought as to the kind of jewellery she wears and her personality. Does she usually wear simple, practical jewellery or does she prefer larger extravagant jewellery items which she can show off? Some people have fairly unique tastes and if this is the case it may be safer to go shopping together to look at engagement rings.

Budget is one of the first things to consider, whilst blowing two month's salary on this important jewellery item is a romantic gesture it is not always practical. How much you can afford will affect the style and size of your choice of engagement rings so it is important to know how much you wish to spend at the start.

If you plan to surprise her with a ring, you can always get the size changed if it does not fit correctly. However resizing can alter or remove any engravings so be sure to get this done only when you know it fits.

Traditionally engagement rings are made from yellow gold, there are now more modern options for jewellery including white gold and platinum. Diamond rings are usually made from 18k gold or metal of a higher value such as platinum.

Diamond rings come in shapes and styles to suit all tastes and budgets. The larger, more expensive shapes which require diamonds of higher quality are square such as the marquise, which has a point at one end to flatter long slim hands, or the princess cut. The cushion cut is a pillow shaped diamond with a mixture of round and square edges. Round and oval shapes are popular, they flatter all hand shapes and are usually slightly cheaper. A romantic option is a heart shaped diamond.

When choosing a diamond for diamond rings you will need to choose the cut, this is how the diamond has been cut for maximum sparkle effect. The more surfaces the diamond has, the more it will sparkle. The clarity is the grade of the diamond, a way of measuring blemishes, air pockets and other materials inside your diamond. The fewer cracks and blemishes, the purer the diamond and the more expensive it will be.

Diamonds have a colour tone ranging from yellow and brown to completely clear which has an effect on the cost of the diamond. When choosing diamond rings you should bear in mind the colour of your setting and your future fiancés taste in jewellery.

The carat is the weight of the diamond in grams, however depending on how the diamond is cut it will not necessarily be an accurate guide to the actual diamond size. The setting of your diamond can be a feature in itself with styles including cluster, carved scroll, light reflecting silver cups and six pronged tiffany styles among others. Whether you choose an elaborate setting or one which simply shows off the beauty of the stones will depend again on the sort of diamond engagement rings you desire.
